Walter Allen Shupe entered into eternal life Sunday, July 1, 2018 at home surrounded by his family. He was the eldest son of Walter Herbert Shupe and Genevieve Huish Shupe.
Walter was born June 6, 1930 in Douglas. At the age of 2 the family relocated to Colonia Juarez where he graduated high school, married Ruth Cluff in 1952 and served in the United States Army.
Walter was no stranger to hard work throughout his life and taught his children the value of a strong work ethic by example. Working shift work in the copper mines 12 hours a day, he farmed 150+ acres of cotton, corn, alfalfa and grain in his spare time. He took great pride in his career with Phelps Dodge Corporation in Arizona (Bisbee and Morenci), Peru and was instrumental in the opening of the Candelaria Copper Mine in Chile during the early 90’s. An inspiration and mentor to many, Walter was a good listener to all he worked with and above all is known for his honesty and compassion. In his retirement years, he especially loved camping, gardening, fly fishing and spending quality time with family.
As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served diligently in numerous callings throughout his life. He was especially proud of all his grandchildren and the 8 grandsons who served full-time missions. He had a way of making every kid feel like his very favorite. His grandkids credit him for instilling in them a real appreciation for a hard day’s work.
The family would like to extend our gratitude for the tenderness and loving care provided by Hospice Compassus as well as the support of family and friends, grandchildren and great grandchildren
Walter is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 66 years, their 5 children, Walter Rex Shupe, Eagar; Ray Wayne Shupe, Alamo, California; Kathleen Ruth Williams, Safford; Marvin Dale Shupe, Pleasant Hill, California; Karen Laree Merrill, Eagar; 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren and counting.
He is reunited in heaven with his parents, 3 brothers, a sister and his infant daughter, Donna Louise.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 6, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Eagar Stake Center, with visitation one hour prior. Interment will follow the funeral services at the Luna, New Mexico Cemetery.
