Robert “Bob” Hank Rogers was born March 19, 1933 to Hyrum Floyd Rogers and Arizola Martha Sharp Rogers in Springerville and passed away, Saturday, November 9, 2019 in Springerville. The Rogers family made their home in Nutrioso and that is where Bob joined his older siblings, Isabel, Leo, Richard, Leonard and Jimmy. Later a final child would be born to the family his youngest brother, Larry.
When Bob was about twelve years old he contracted osteomyelitis and was in the Phoenix Crippled Children’s Hospital for many months where he was confined to a wheel chair and had to relearn how to walk upon his release.
Bob lived in Phoenix with his older brother and wife, Richard and Virginia Rogers while he attended Phoenix Tech for four years. He would return to Nutrioso during Christmas holiday and summers where he worked to help provide for his mother and for his education. While in Phoenix he delivered newspapers and other odd jobs to help pay his way. Upon graduation from high school as a carpenter, he returned to Nutrioso where he met and married Doris Marlene Gilliam February 9, 1953. Bob and Doris made their home in Nutrioso until December 1964 when they moved to Springerville as the new owners of Jim’s Garage in Springerville. They owned and operated Jim’s Garage together and later with Larry and Janet Rogers. When Larry decided to retire, his oldest son, Lynn and Laura were part owners until Lynn went to work with the mines in Morenci. In 2004 Bob decided he was ready to retire and closed the business.
Bob served on the Springerville Town Council, the Round Valley School Board and with the Round Valley Waters Users Association. Bob never sat still for long. He was a jack-of-all- trades. He could do carpentry work, plumbing, electrical; building many houses from the ground up. He was a great farmer and spent many an hour in the hay fields in Nutrioso and later in Springerville and Eagar for he and Larry and many friends and neighbors. Bob was a master gardener. His gardens were some of the best in the area with heavy yields for canning, freezing and sharing. Bob was always working on a project and was artistic and creative. His helper in any venture was the love of his life, Doris and sometimes a grandkid or two.
Bob and his brothers loved to hunt and fish and even had a hunting shack up on Escudilla mountain that stood until the Wallow fire. His love of hunting and fishing was shared with his own children and his grandchildren. Bob and Doris had a place at Roosevelt Lake for many years until it was too hard to keep up two places. No matter what, he was never leaving this mountain that he dearly loved.
Bob and Doris became members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and on February 5, 2000 were sealed for time and eternity in the Mesa Arizona Temple. This was a joyful day for Bob’s family.
Bob is survived by his daughters, Dorlene Allred, Eagar; Nola (Larry) Porter, Eagar; sons, Lynn (Laura) Rogers, Pima; Ronnie (Kaylinn) Rogers, Springerville; 14 grandchildren: Tanya Tapia, Jay Rogers, Sarah Campagna, Jenna Farnes, Tad Allred, Valerie Porter, Maggie Lewis, Keith Rogers, Duane Porter, Timothy Rogers, Kresta Macias, Kody Hall, Mikey Hall, Travis Armijo and 32 great grandchildren with one on the way in December.
He is survived by one brother, Larry (Janet) Rogers and two sisters-in-law, Virginia Rogers and Phyllis Rogers and many beloved nieces and nephews and extended family members.
