Nettie Robbie Russell Davis, 83, passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at the Hinkson Assisted Living Center in St. Johns after a year-long battle with metastatic melanoma. She was born July 9, 1934 in Morenci, the youngest child of Robert Clifton Russell and Nettie Belle Roberts Russell. As the “caboose” in a “yours, mine and ours” family, she had numerous older siblings that both teased and defended her.
A child of the great depression, Robbie spent her childhood years in and around Duncan and moved to Santa Rosa, California in 1942 where she graduated from Sonoma Valley High School in 1952. Along the way in 1948, she and her family stopped in St. Johns, en route to Oklahoma to visit relatives. While in St. Johns at the age of 14, she met Calvin Lamar Davis and they were both smitten with each other. They made a pact to marry when they were old enough and then carried on a long-distance romance until they were married in 1953. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple.
Robbie was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she filled many assignments in the Young Women and Primary organizations. She sincerely loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and worked hard to live its principles. She was not born a member of the church. Her early years were in the Baptist faith and she spent her middle school years with the nuns at a Catholic boarding school in California. Perhaps that’s why she always sought ways to build bridges between members of different religions wherever she lived. She loved people and saw us all as children of God and therefore her brother or sister.
As an adult Robbie spent time working as an administrative assistant at the bank, the Apache County Treasurer’s office and the Farr Insurance Agency. Even so, she never wanted to be more than Calvin’s companion, whether that meant feeding doggie calves, irrigating or serving in the Snowflake LDS Temple. They spent 57 years toiling together until Calvin passed away in 2010.
Robbie loved nothing more than being surrounded by family and friends. She literally lit up like a light bulb when this happened, often causing others to do the same. As a child, she was painfully shy, but as an adult she never met a stranger and was one of the best ambassadors to the nation that the town of St. Johns will ever have.
Robbie was preceded in death by her husband, parents, all her siblings and one son, Stewart.
She is survived by five sons, Russell (Annette), Nelson (Tammy), Cameron (Cathe), Aaron and Dallas (Jaymi), 20 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the loving care given to Robbie by Kristi Padilla and the entire staff at Hinkson Assisted Living and Hospice Compassus, nurse Destiny Kirk.
