Lon Duane Mangum, was born April 24, 1939 in St. Johns. He died at home Saturday, August 18, 2018 in St. Johns. His parents were Cyrus Lowell Mangum and Ethel Rencher Mangum.
Lon had one brother, Earl, St. Johns; two sisters, Joan, Silver City and Jessie.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife of 50 years, Alice Jeanne Overson Mangum and his sister, Jessie Mangum Adair.
On January 1, 1958, Lon married his sweetheart, Jeanne and had six children: Carol Nahoolewa, Texas; Howard Mangum, Missouri; Karleen Bishop, Alaska; Ryan Mangum, Alaska; Pamela Anderson, Texas; and Aaron Mangum, Arizona. Jeanne died in May 2008 after a long illness.
In 2010 Lon married his neighbor of forty years, Claudene Postert. She has six children so the family doubled in size. There are 23 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
Lon was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held many jobs during his years. His all-time favorite job was working in the Snowflake Temple. He worked there for five years.
Lon and Jeanne settled in St. Johns and Lon went to work for the State of Arizona Wildlife setting traps and helping to keep the wild game under control. Lon loved this job and was sad when it was phased out. He had learned a lot about the wildlife, grasses and trees and he knew every stream. He next worked for several different companies. His last job was with Apache County working on their equipment. He retired in 2009. After retirement he directed his attention to his little heard of Black Angus cows. He always said they were a hobby; an expensive hobby. He raised his cows and they are always in demand. He always remembered their age and who was whose sister. After retirement he bought a riding lawn mower and would leave the house and his wife wouldn't see him for hours. Soon the neighborhood started to shine with mowed yards, trimmed trees and all weed eating done. The neighbors loved him. He was a man who believed in giving service and spent many hours doing so. He will be missed by all.
